marina near Branford/New Haven CT?

I am planning a trip from Port Washington to somewhere near New Haven CT(that area is a day's sail from Port Wash.) Does anyone know of any marinas/yacht clubs were we can spend the night at a mooring/slip. A place with a restaurant and bar would nice. Thanks Chris

Thanks Denise, that looks like a great resource. I have heard it mentioned on the forum, but since I only get to do a cruising trip once a year I never really looked into it before. Chris

Very shallow water there, looks like no moorings because there are only channels in and out. Locals would know better. Good luck!

Re: marina near Branford/New Haven CT?

Milford offers a busy harbor with good access to restaurants, chandlers, and nightlife. If Milford YC can't accommodate you, try Milford Boatworks. The current at the entrance can run quite fast (better than three knots) but it calms down once you're in. Space is pretty tight. You can also anchor outside of Milford harbor in the lee of Charles Island, where it is quieter. We overnighted once in Branford, where Branford YC was happy to have us visit. Nothing really within walking distance of the dock there afaik. Shallow water at low tide kept us in the slip for several hours the next morning, so if you draw 6'9", be forewarned. Guilford is a touch further up the coast. Its channel is pretty narrow, but the marsh and Guilford YC are very pretty. The YC offers bicycles to visiting crews. They only have slips, and charge accordingly. There are some excellent restaurants in Guilford, and the town green is lovely. Fair winds!

If you want a slip in a marina, Milford would also be my suggestion. The Milford Landing Marina is town owned and the last one at the head of the harbor right in town. Short walk to lots of restaurants.

Re: marina near Branford/New Haven CT?

Thanks for all the input. I will start checking out your suggestions. I am not sure I want to deal with what seems like shallow water in Branford so I am also starting to look in New Haven harbor itself. Any input would be appreciated. Chris

Re: marina near Branford/New Haven CT?

New Haven harbor is very commercial. I would be very concerned about someone boarding the boat at night at a dock. Worked there for years. Not a place I would want to spend the night.

Milford is your best bet. The town marina charges 3.00 a ft for transient dockage.

harbor master's number is: 203-882-5049
