1978 AMF Sunbird Sailboat

A friend is looking at a 1978 16' AMF Sunbird Sailboat. Based on the pictures he showed me, I'd call the condition Fair to Good; old sails, no motor. Can anyone hazard a guess as to what this boat is worth? The Seller is asking $1500.

If the sails aren't in good shape/usable the boat isn't worth very much. I doubt it's worth 1500 if the sails were in good shape..

It is worth what he will pay for it

a 16' boat up here of that vintage would be under $500 unless it was pristine

Yea, sounds high, does it come with a good rust free trailer with new tires and bearings? Trailer would likely be worth more than the boat. If it had very good sails good trailer and a motor (would not really need much more than a trolling motor) then I could see it being worth 1200 to 1500. In fair without the above then I would say 350 to 500. Thing is it is not like there is going to be much demand for something like that unless there happens to be a good sized one design fleet in the area.

SUNBIRD 16 (AMF) sailboat specifications and details on sailboatdata.com
$1500 IF it is in mint condition.
Half that or less if in tired condition.

Sunbird is a pretty good design. Fast. You can find used sails relatively easy and for not much ($150-200 at the most). Make sure the centerboard box is not cracked (happens when you have a hard grounding). Make sure centerboard is in good condition. Make sure the mast is not bent. If the trailer is decent, I would pay $800-900 for it.
