I would say $1500 for a project boat to $4000 for Chip Ahoy, in the Midwest.

Just bought a 1983 C22 $5,000...trailer, new sails, perfect motor, 30 years of widgets, solar panel, auto pilot, tiller tamer, compass, inclinator, cup holders, new cushions, new lines, adj back stay, traveler, roller furling...no soft spots...no bumps or gouges in the hull.

After years of Hobie sailing you are moving to the other end of the speed spectrum. I too am an aging Hobie sailor. As age comes on sometimes the need for speed is replaced by the need to pee! But, regardless of how old i become, I view life that my best days are yet to come!!! That, and I'd rather be over the hill than buried under it!

I recently read a blog of a couple who sail a Catalina 22. They love the boat. Sail it mostly every weekend. Anchor out, swim, lunch, sometimes overnight. Adventures every weekend! They also maintain a wall of shame. On the wall exists pictures of boats they have passed while on the bay. In that they don't get to pass a lot of boats, just their way of saying "Take that!" On each picture is a message stamped on from a postal type stamp it says "You were passed by a Catalina 22!"

Obviously the Cat 22 is not a high performance boat. But with Portsmouth rating of right around 243 it's in the same neighborhood as similar sized boats. And compared to sailing a Hobie you'll be high and dry.

You don't say where you are or what type of sailing you do. We currently have a Cat 22 that we really love. Its a decent compromise and does a little of everything. A powerful ( 6 HP+) and reliable outboard is a must if you go out in the salt water..and I would not trust the boat to sail in more that 20 knots wind or more than a moderate chop, although some people do.

We got " lapped" by a Hobie the other day but were way more comfortable. Table, chairs, bunks, storage, seating....

I would be sailing in an inland lake in Michigan that has a channel out to Lake Michigan. Would not venture out into the big lake without ideal conditions and even then not far from port. Have a Yamaha 6 HP . Is that enough? Also, how new should sails be ? Boat has not been in the water for 3 years. Boat is orig from Orlando but don;t know if salt or fresh water.

In that case I think the Cat 22 would be fine. Supposedly the Yamaha engines are the shizzle. I think that's probably perfect, I wouldn't buy another engine then. For $3500 I'd want sails that were crisp feeling. I got my Cat 22 for a song and my sails aren't crispy but they are okay.

They are simple You should look at the keel, maybe put it down if possible. Check the cable on the keel that lifts it up. They have to be replaced every few years. Find out when the keel bolt was replaced. Make sure the keel is in decent shape around the bolt. Check the outboard bracket. The lower shrouds go to aluminum plates that bolt onto the mast - most should have been upgraded to stainless steel.

The deck and cockpit - look and make sure they aren't soft and look at the bolts and plates that anchor the stays and the life line stanchions. look for leaks, corrosion and rot there.

Price Update. When I stopped to just look at the boat the marine store was closed . A tag on the boat said $3500. When I called to inquire about the boat the salesman said that they were selling it for someone and the price was $2000. How do I go about finding a surveyor?

Hey, I know those guys.

Polar Bear: 6HP is more than enough for a Catalina 22. Anything bigger would just be wasting gas and weighing down your transom, and you won't go any faster. If you're really worried you could get a high-thrust prop, which is more appropriate for how a sailboat works, but even that is probably unnecessary on a lake where you're not likely to get big waves.

I've never heard of anyone getting a survey for a $2000 boat. I think you should just look for the things that Sal Paradise mentioned. If you don't know what you're doing at all (as I didn't when I bought mine), try to find a more experienced sailor in your area who can go look at it with you. There used to be a thread around here for that sort of thing, although I don't know if it's fallen out of use or not, but it worked great for me.
