New monohull sailor- Catalina 22

I have sailed Hobie cats for many years, but am now older and less agile and like to stay drier. I saw a 1976 Catalina 22 for sale down the road at the marine supply store. Price was 3500, but having looked online , I'm sure that is negotiable. However , I don't even know what questions to ask or how to evaluate the boat. Leaks , cracks, age of sails , what? I can either trailer or put in slip, but mostly I want to know seaworthiness.

Get a surveyer to check it.
check rigging conditions,check the bilge.
ask for a test sail and try everything.

Unless the boat has been redone recently I'd say that is a little steep. Cat 22 sale for much less, however you need to factor in travel and time spent looking at other boats. Not speaking from experience but from others they are tough little boats. I have a 81 with trailer paid little over 2000.00 but could have gotten one cheaper if I had in more time in before I bought one. Make sure the boat has everything you need. Parts bill adds up quick!

3500 seems high unless it is in immaculate condition. For that price the motor should run perfectly.

always in decline-never hitting bottom

There is a very active owners association. See CLICKY

Assuming it is a swing keel if you are thinking of trailoring it then the keel pivot is the main issue. This can not be checked easily.

Other than that just the normal things like rig and sail condition.

I have fond memories of the Catalina 22 or Jaguar 22 as it was known as in the UK. I sailed mine all around the West coast of Scotland and trailored it down to the Adriatic for a summer there.

Cat22 WITH trailer, well performing motor and in great condition doesn't sound too bad. Any one of those four being "off" would scotch the deal for me, tho.
It *may* be dry-er; but it's still right close to the water unless yer stuck for some reason at 22 feet, ya might look into something trailerable at a bit more length...along with beam and freeboard...*and* avoid "foot-itis at the same time

I went from a 9' sail dink 30 yr ago to a 27'X10' coastal cruiser three months ago. Sure it was a bit daunting; but I'm comfortable with it now (I *do* still have the training wheels on!) and I stay dry..unless I drop the hook and go for a swim!

Best,
Paul

Re: New monohull sailor- Catalina 22

Regarding seaworthiness: The C22 swing keel has good form stability, with not a lot of ballast (500 lb or so). That means that in moderate conditions it will stay on its feet well. When things start piping up, it sails more like a dinghy. You will need to keep one hand on the mainsheet to quickly dump wind, or it will round up (sometimes quickly) into the wind. Very good boat for a first keel boat... inshore.

Wow, I'm shocked at the comments, Maybe everything is more expensive out here in Arizona (supply and demand and all) but people ask $5,000-8,000 all the time for 22' Catalina's with a trailer out here and apparently get it because they disappear off CL after a few weeks.

I would say $1500 for a project boat to $5000 for Chip Ahoy, in the Midwest.
