Another local trick. The public mooring field can remain full all weekend, with boats that arrived during the week.
Drop the hook and hail the Harbormaster, who are extremely nice and helpful. They will put you on a list for a private mooring. If one is available at 3pm, they will come escort you to it. Same price as public mooring.
Me, I avoid the place in July and Aug. Was there in both May and June and will return in Sep. Just be wary of BI race week in June, but still doable then.
Years ago we used to go to Block every Columbus Day weekend. There were very few other boats around with the exception of the small Newport Yacht Club race. Several times we were able to tie to the dock and enjoy electric.
As all good things, this to ended. Word got out that it was nice that time of year, and now it seems to be a last destination for the sailing season. There are still plenty of moorings, but no more dock space.
