Lite Cylinder LP Tank Recall
So, I opened up the recent Practical Sailor to find that my LP cylinders have been recalled and that the company, Lite Cylinder, is out of business.

According to the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (yes, we have one of those) they received the following letter from the Lite Cylinder Company:

PHMSA was notified by The Lite Cylinder Company of the following:

“Please be advised that The Lite Cylinder Company is no longer in business and is currently evaluating its legal options. The company’s facility is now closed and unable to receive cylinders returned per the instructions detailed in US DOT – PHMSA Emergency Order No. 2013-002. Furthermore, the company is financially insolvent and will not be able to recompense cylinder owners, dealers and distributors for the expenses incurred in complying with this Emergency Recall Order.”

PHMSA developed this website so that cylinder owners and retailers accepting returns can report serial numbers of disposed cylinders. This reporting will help PHMSA track the effectiveness of the recall.

So, I'm up a creek, but why? In neither the PS article nor the PHMSA website is the actual problem addressed and the same goes for the article and a quick Google search. I have had two of these cylinders since 2008 with no problems. My only complaint, up until this point, was that New Zealand would not fill them, stating that their safety had not been thoroughly evaluated by NZ officials--at the time I was a bit miffed but now...

Have I been sitting on two 20lb time bombs?! I will just go back to steel tanks for now but I would like to know what the actual defect is--the PS article made it seem pretty dire.

If anyone knows the answer, i'd love to hear it. Also, if you have one of these tanks, you can read about the recall and register your tank's serial number at the PHMSA website here to help them track the recall:

Re: Lite Cylinder LP Tank Recall
I am in the same pickle. Had my entires propane system redone 3 years ago, never used it and now the tank is off my boat and in the back yard. Tank appears to be full. Read the failure rate but no information where this failure occurs especially with the small tanks which have the least problems. Because of the recall I don't think most places will refill them now. Nobody wants to deal with these to recapture the propane and I was told to hook it up to my grill and just burn it off. If there is a failure how safe is this practice? Now I need a 10 lb horizontal tank which are not that common and quite pricy if aluminum.
