Things never change

I am rereading 'The Riddle of the Sands', something I do every ten years or so because it is such a good (sailing) novel. One line caught my attention. Carruthers, the narrator and not really much of a sailor says about Davies who is an accomplished sailor, "He was utterly without that didactic pedantry which yachting has a fatal tendency to engender in men who profess it."

Made me think about Sailnet.

We were going to go via Newfoundland and Labrador but June remembered that one of the kids is getting married this summer - details, details!

Re: Things never change

I read that book about 2 years ago and I remember that line also. It is a great read. It reminds me also of my flying career. We used to say" those who can fly,do, those who can't teach, those who can do neither, evaluate.

I know you are NOT trying to insinuate that sailnutters are didactic pedants!

Re: Things never change

I think anyone who uses the phrase "didactic pedantry" has clearly demonstrated themselves to be a pedant!

Re: Things never change

We must get a Pedant Registry started then, and get the word out to the poor neighbors...

Re: Things never change

There are didactics and pedants here on Sailnet. That's a didactic statement.

You mean there are pedants and didacts on Sailnet, if I may say so without being pedantic.

Didactics as in instruction without pedanticism.
