Is there a speed limit on the Great lakes

The reason why I ask the question is because there seems to be no enforcement of a speed limit especially on the inside of the break wall near Buffalo in lake Erie. I find myself getting passed by cigarette boats doing in excess of 60mph on the inside of the break wall and the law enforcement agency's on the water seem to just ignore it. Fortunately there haven't been any collisions recently but it has to happen soon if things keep up. Everything that I have found on line says if its not posted its up to the individual to decide what a safe speed is for the area they are in. I don't have any problem with people taking their over powered (compensating for something) boats out into the open lake and burning a little fuel. There is enough room for everyone out there. I was thinking about bringing with water balloons and a sling shot launcher as a way to express my displeasure of their excessive speed in the inside of the break wall but I have a feeling Law enforcement would frown upon that. Any suggestions on how to bring this to someone's attention that cares and has the authority to do something about it.

is it a posted no wake zone? If not, then it's col regs and coast guard.

It's 5 o'clock somewhere:

only in the Detroit river & St Clair river (Michigan law - "The maximum speed limit of 55 miles per hour does not apply to the Great Lakes and Lake St. Clair, except for an area within 1 mile of the shoreline") You would have to check with NY for the lay there.

Re: Is there a speed limit on the Great lakes

I have had the same issue and it seemed worse this past weekend and I think that may have been due to some kind of a boat show at Erie Basin that was drawing in some extra cigarette boats. They were rafted up 7 deep at Templetons Landing. Hopefully it will calm down. The wakes they throw can be awful. I notice people who rent kayaks at the inner harbor sometimes venture out to the outer harbor and one of these days there is going to be a tragedy. There should be a rule that they have to stay on the river.

Re: Is there a speed limit on the Great lakes

We found Lake Erie power boaters especially inconsiderate. Here in lower New York State we have found power boaters more considerate than any other area we have been in.

Re: Is there a speed limit on the Great lakes

Some power boaters are smart, and know that they have no chance of breaking the open-water speed limit:
300,000 km/s.
It's not just a good idea, it's the law.

Seriously, excess speed, even when no speed limit is posted, could be a violation of the rules of the road if it is unsafe for conditions, does not allow for control and stopping, does not allow a boat to meet its obligations, causes damage to the environment, facilities, or other craft, etc. But, too often, these determinations might not be made until there is an accident.

Re: Is there a speed limit on the Great lakes

Last summer there was an advert up on a community notice board for some massive cigarette boat and someone had scrawled across the advert in sharpie "Infernal noise machine". I thought it was quite funny.
