Re: Santana 23D any boats built like it today?
I own a 23D. It's one of the ultimate designs from the late 70's. It was designed to out J24 the J24 and it's difficult to find something that points higher that isn't raced in the America's cup. More sail area, a 10 stay bendy oversized rig, wider, lighter and deeper than a J24, with a real interior that the J24 lacks, and "real" NASA style foils. It was launched during the 1980 deep recession and didn't sell in the numbers it should and never got it's one design class much off the ground. Most noteworthy is that the design was reincarnated over the next 20 years by Shock as various toned down models based on the original hull. The other boats mentioned are just so -so mini race cruisers or cruiser racers. The only thing that comes close to the 23D is a S-2 Grand Slam dagger board based 26 which I've never seen offered for less than 12K. I saw a 23D offered on yacht world a few weeks back for 6-7-8K - I suggest you grab it if you can. The boat truly is in a class by itself.
