Discounts at Annapolis Sailboat show

This is the year (stop laughing) I finish out fitting 5'Oclock. I need (or want) a ton of gear to complete her. Some of the bigger items are:
1. refrigeration kit similar to Adler/Barbour coldmachine. I want ice cubes.
2. windlass, back ain't what it used to be
3. water heater, ran off engine heat
4. Electronic package, depth finder, VHF, AIS, maybe radar, thats still open.
5. Battery charging and monitoring via solar
6. pumps, bilge, galley and washdown.

And more.

So the question is this, are there deals to be had at the show or would I do better by shopping the internet? Did you get a great deal and if so would you share the details? We've been to Miami and Annapolis shows in the past but it was mostly to drool on the Farr 40s and Hallberg-rassy boats, not to purchase gear so pricing wasn't noticed.

You will find sale prices at the show.

You might get better deals from Defender's show pricing by have the items shipped, avoiding state sales tax.

Agree about Defender. They have an online Boat Show Sale in addition to sales during every major holiday and, lately, just whenever they seem to feel like it.

Also, consider how you're going to get the stuff home. If they charge to ship it, that might eat into any discount. If you're driving it doesn't matter, of course.

We will be driving and have enough room in the vehicle to transport the items. Buying the item and taking delivery at the show incurs a 6% Maryland sales tax. Does anyone know if one can make the purchase at the show, have the item shipped to a different state and not incur the sales tax?

Depends on the vendor. Defender ships most things unless it's something that's a blowout in their booth.

Over the years we've gotten some VERY good deals at the show. Like anything else there's some luck involved. If a vendor is blowing out exactly what you're looking for you make out; and the best deals are usually had on the last day of the show. I've hit on items as odd as a teak AC vent and an Edson chartplotter mount.

For electronics check out the booth for The GPS Store (The GPS Store, Inc. GPS Systems, Marine Electronics). They tend to have really good boat show prices, their folks are knowledgeable about what works with what, and they usually know all the little "extra" bits your install will require. They're usually over by the Hendricks Gin tent next to the hotel (definitely visit Hendricks for the free samples).

If you're hanging around for more than a day definitely try and catch them breaking down the show. Get a spot on top of the Marriott and a Pain Killer and watch the show! Definitely worth seeing once.

All good advices above. But do your homework and go armed with prices from other suppliers for an educated purchase decision.

I'm sure defender will have a booth at the show. I'd bet they will match all prices and then help you figure if it's cheaper to ship or not.

Also be aware that some items may only be available from a warehouse. It's just not gonna be cost effective for a manufacturer to run a full retail operation from a booth.

I live 15 minutes from defender bit often ship things to my sisters house in RI as its more cost effective. And NO I don't give a crap if its moral or legal. I pay more than my fair share in taxes. Single, no dependents, and a good job = tax nightmare.

Go to the boat show, and play one vendor against the other for the same item. For instance, to Vendor 1: "What is your BOAT SHOW price?" Then, go to Vendor 2 and say: "Vendor 1 will sell this to me for $X, so will you beat that?" Go back to vendor 1 and tell him the Vendor 2 price... This works.

Eventually you will have reached the bottom. Enjoy!

Addendum, I would strongly suggest the FrigoBoat refrigeration system.
And, the best on-demand water pump I've ever owned is a "GalleyMaid" ones, which you get the best prices at: Raz Marine Head Marine Water Pumps Fort Lauderdale Florida
