Universal Atomic 4

Hello all,

The boat we are purchasing (Northern 29) is equipped with a Universal Atomic 4 gas engine model 5101. I have found on line where to buy parts etc. and had a nice email from Don Moyer.

What I'm looking for is a service type manual that would explain in layman terms the operation of these engines. Especially how to prepare for winter storage and preparing for the sailing season in the spring. Any leads to maintenance information would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

I highly recommend purchasing the manual - I have both the original and the Moyer manual, and the Moyer manual provides excellent detailed instructions for just about anything you wish to do. When all else fails, go to their forum and someone will quickly respond to any questions you may have. Lots of folks here will be willing to render assistance as well. Go to the Gear and Maintenance section of the Sailnet forum and look for the A4 section.

Of all boat motors, the Atomic 4 is the one with BY FAR the most dedicated community to help you maintain and, if necessary, fix it. And people are nice, too.

It also helps that this is one of the simplest motors.

Re: Universal Atomic 4

Astonishingly simple. All the technology of the Model A Ford brought to you in the 1950s, side-valve, low compression, carb, points.

Dead battery? Crank-start it. they run smoothly and are failrly quiet compared to diesels.

And gasoline is safe as long as it doesn't leak somewhere in a closed or semi-closed space. Your nose is your friend before starting the A4.

But that's what most boats had in the '60s when I did some deliveries around New England. Reliable motor.
