Westport Harbor

I am on a boat in Westport Harbor, MA. Will head out tomorrow for a day of sailing. My first time here. Any destination suggestions, both on and off the water? Can I get to and back from Cuttyhunk Island in a day? Any advice/warnings about sailing into and out of the Harbor? Thanks for any info.

Re: Westport Harbor

Westport is one of the secrets of the Massachusetts coast. Please don't tell anyone...

Westport Rivers Winery makes very good sparkling wine. Their sister operation (actually "son" would be a better term) Buzzards Bay Brewery makes GREAT beer, and they are only a few minutes from the harbor by car. Both destinations are off of Hix Bridge Road.

There is an AWESOME "secret" beach that you can access from Tripp's boatyard. Walk the path to the west out to the tip of Horseneck Point, or dinghy over to it.

You are possibly on a Pearson 36... You CAN make it over and back to Cuttyhunk in a (long) day. Getting TO Cuttyhunk is a piece of cake. Getting back to Westport, against a prevailing easterly, and the infamous Buzzards Bay Chop takes some work... If possible, I strongly advise anchoring in Cuttyhunk, and returning in early morning.

Stay in the channel, which seems to meander to the north (around the flats), and then comes frighteningly close to The Knubble. As I recall, it seems like a long trip in and out of the harbor. You are really not clear, until you have passed between Two Mile Rock to the west, and Old C0ck (male foul - I knew that the nannybot would catch that) to the east.

We waited for the tide to change in Vineyard Sound and left Vineyard Haven at 11am. We made Newport by 7pm. Never more than 6k.
the prevailing SW winds allowed us to very close reach from Cuttyhunk to the Narragansett entrance. Your angle should be better.
Having said that, there's a bit of NE winds in the forecast this weekend, so it all depends on conditions. Ideally it could be a beam reach there and a close reach back but you never know! Take enough fuel and have a backup plan.

If you anchor outside Cuttyhunk be aware that the shallower depths close to shore, under 10', are weedy. You might think you are hooked well...
Water in the mid teens has no weeds and better holding.

Re: Westport Harbor

Thanks for the info. Was a great sail over to Cuttyhunk and back. Hit some heavy chop, but a fantastic sail nonetheless. Couldn't have asked for a better day. And what a peaceful, scenic harbor. Anyone have any info on the wreck just outside of Westport Harbor?
