Nissan NS5B Stalling in gear

Before our trip, I dropped the old NS5B that I picked up back in the fall into a tank of water and made sure it started OK (which it did, on 2nd or 3rd pull) and that ran OK. The tank I had was small, so I didn't want to risk putting the engine in gear. It idled fine (burned a little oil, but I assume I simply added too much oil to the fuel mix) and ran well at high throttle, too.

Fast forward to the day after our trip, and I finally had a chance to put the engine on the dinghy. It started just fine and (other than adjusting the choke a bit as it warmed up) seemed to run OK, until I put the engine in gear. Then it would jump the dinghy forward with a mild surge, then die. I tried dialing back the throttle and doing it again, but had the same result. I repeated this several times and adjusted the choke for a while, thinking maybe I had an air problem (since the fuel supply seemed OK since it ran), but that didn't seem to help.

Any idea why an outboard would run OK out of gear, but not when it is in gear?

Re: Nissan NS5B Stalling in gear

Put it in neutral and then turn the prop by hand with the ignition cut off. It could be that a shaft bearing has gone AWOL. If it is stiff to turn on the prop, strip the lower unit down ad check the bearings.
