Tall Mast Low Bridge WTF

Driving to work this morning a sailboat with about a 50 foot mast was apparently trying to get under the Bay Bridge where the bridge clearance is only about 25 feet at most. Total fail and the wind/current had them pinned to the bridge. WTF

Before anyone asks, no, it wasn't me.

I thought the Bay Bridge had significantly more than 25' of clearance. Were they trying to cut under one of the lower sections?

Agree.

The main span of the Bay bridge between Annapolis area and Kent Island is significantly higher than 50ft. How else would they be able to get the tall ship into Baltimore?

Maybe they were just anchored?

Re: Tall Mast Low Bridge WTF

At the center, highest portion it is 182 feet, from there it drops to as low as 15.

I suspect the boat skipper lost control if he hit in the 25 foot section. I've seen no reports yet from the MDTA.

Re: Tall Mast Low Bridge WTF

They were nowhere near the main span. They were quite close to the Eastern Shore.

Re: Tall Mast Low Bridge WTF

My chart shows it at 58 feet as far as a mile out from Kent, and there is 80 feet of water there. Someone made a boo-boo.
