Re: Lost my rudder!

I wouldn't deal with Foss again (again) if they were the only folks willing to deliver a rudder and I was stuck on a desert island waiting for one. Just a personal opinion based on past performance from their Florida operation.

As Denise and kriss note, jerry-rigging a steering oar used to be considered a standard technique, and steering oars are all the "rudder" that the Vikings ever used. To sail, sack, burn, and return home from all corners of their known world.

"Git 'er home" ? Okay, haul, gob in epoxy paste, bolt up some light steel plate with 1/4x20 bolts side to side. Getting a proper replacement rudder is going to mean either a bloody fortune, or waiting a week for motor freight to get it there.

Not my experience at all, or wouldn't have suggested checking with them.

Re: Lost my rudder!

Glad you made it home. Some worksheets here might help with your replacement.

Good luck.

For the benefit of other forum members - Yes good, or bad experiences would be appreciated.

I know that Foss makes rudders, and has patterns for many production boats from the '80s and '90s.

Thanks!

Re: Lost my rudder!

First, I'm really sorry to hear about you losing your rudder. Vacations are something that we plan for and look forward to for some time; and this is not the way to end one.

Second, kudos to you for jury rigging a rudder and getting home.

Finally, as another Mirage 29 owner, I would really like to know how this works out for you. Getting small parts for a boat built by a company that went out of business years ago is tough enough.
