Need help and advice

Ok so I got a labor day race. I'm taking my 16fter and my friend made a bet he's gonna beat me. How can I beat a old tired Hobie cat? I have a 16ft mistral new rigging every thing set up for racing. How can I beat a cataraman with a mono hull. I got spinnaker jib and main, he has just main and jib. Need help and advice

Sail better. Drill a hole in his hull. Hope for a long downwind leg. Get him sickeningly drunk the night before.

Do I have any chance. Hell I was thinking filling the hull with some water.

Re: Need help and advice

Of course you have a chance. If you sail better: pick your lay lines better, trim your sails better, use the currents better, then you can beat him. Failing that, cheat.

Re: Need help and advice

Paul hit the nail on the head: sail better than him. In heavy air, you should hold your own. In light air, he'll probably win, but you can increase your odds (or decrease the amount by which you lose) by sailing better than him. Read the wind better, set your trim better.

Re: Need help and advice

Huck, talk it up. Smack talk him. He might get so spooked he doesn't show up. Wear a BFS t-shirt. Put some cat stickers on your boat with lines through them.

Re: Need help and advice

You are probably going to point a lot higher than the cat, so the weather legs are going to be your money makers. If you can set up the course to take advantage of this, perhaps with a sort of tacit agreement that it will balance things out a bit, kinda like a handicap?
Also, the Hobie is much better on a reach than a run so with your chute you may be able to stay close as he'll have to sail farther if he wants to take advantage of his speed.
It should be very interesting; let us know how it went.

Re: Need help and advice

I agree. The Hobie can't tack like you can. But on a reach it will blow by you like a jet ski.
