WTH is up w/ the spotlight?

Last Saturday I was sailing up the Bay after a day of delightful racing and festivities in Annapolis and not once but twice a southbound powerboat lit me up w/ a very bright spotlight. This has happened before and it's always been a stupid powerboater. I'm just sailing along enjoying a great ride up the flood (SOG never under 7.2!) and minding my own business right on the edge of the channel.

It wasn't like we were in any danger of being in confliction, it was pretty obvious they just wanted to see what that boat was over yonder. Never altered course or slowed down. Both boats were way further inshore and going pretty fast (15 knots+). Just really annoying and murder on my night vision if I happen to be looking that way.

Anyone else have this problem?

Yes - idiot powerboaters cannot move 10 feet without spotlighting everything.

Fighting fire with fire is the only thing that will get through to those clowns...

Anyone sailing at night should have something like this, anyway...

Maybe a secret signal between power boaters

Yeah, great idea! Blind them after they have blinded you. Better hope they are smart enough to slow down once they cannot see any more.

Trying to fight this is like trying to fight radio checks on 16. Fruitless.
sawingknots and capta like this.

Must be one of those active captain applications.

LOL! Yeah, well - at least it's worked for me...

I deal with this a lot, primarily in Florida... Usually on moderately-sized Sea Rays and the like, with remote control searchlights mounted on the bow...

Shining a light back at them until they turn off or avert their own never fails to produce the desired result... They may turn it back on fulltime as soon as they pass me, but it is extremely rare that I ever get lit up a second time...

The appropriate response is to lob a five inch starshell over their boat.
