travlineasy will become famous soon enough
Re: OK, this is cool.....

Neat! Bet that would get your undivided attention from the deck of a slow-moving sailboat.

Thanks,

Gary

Thank you for sharing that as I also dive and have never had that close of encounter with anything that big. I would be cleaning out my wet suit with a hose.

Heh, around here you'd get fined quite heavily for that (the first video).

The killer whale followed the boat. What they could have done!?

The boat was not chasing them. It was the other way around.

Several years ago off San Clemente we sailed unintentionally into what we first thought was a pod of orca calves. Prior to that we saw a CG cutter and a RIB approch a powerboat in the same area and escorted them away.

Not knowing what was going on at the time we continued sailing until we found ourselves in the middle of this pod. We made no attempt to interact with them but, they followed us ( rare from what I heard later ), so, we dropped sails and drifted along and watched for about 30 mins, we didn't bother the Risso's and the GC never bothered us. Once the Risso's moved on so did we, in opposit directions

Risso adults are larger than adult Pac BN dolphins and about the size of orca calves

They would have been expected to cut their engines and drift until the whales had passed them and were safely out of the way, not scream along at full throttle videoing them. Not only that, but they would have been expected to have seen the whales prior to their encounter and stayed clear in the first place, they don't just appear out of nowhere.
