Re: Best Boat Insurance Companies?

I'm curious what towing coverage is. BoatUS unlimited is approx $150 per year itself and worth every penny.

Re: Best Boat Insurance Companies?

I have a 1971 Ericson 32 and got a quote from BoatUS for something in the neighborhood of $300 but they required a survey. Any companies out there that will insure a boat that age/size without a survey? I am mostly just looking for liability and something that would cover the environmental issues if it sank.

eric, I didn't even know that was an option. Do you know if they resell/rebrand TowBoatUS or SeaTow?

Re: Best Boat Insurance Companies?

I've always had Progressive. Previously we've had simple liability coverage for our smaller/inexpensive boats and currently have comprehensive for our Catalina 34. They do not require a survey for either in most cases.

You can find some other sources for quotes here: InsuranceForBoats.org

Re: Best Boat Insurance Companies?

FYI I had a claim with ski safe. That is who Geico uses for their boat insurance. They screwed me around for well over 6 months and then gave me 1/2 of what I should have got to cover the damage. That was after I had to hound them for months and had to get my lawyer involved. I would never insure anything with them ever again.

Honestly, I just purchased the policy today. Once I get the paperwork, I'll post here what the towing facts are.

You bought coverage and don't know what it is?

Given the very low cost, I'm going to bet its pretty limited towing coverage. Probably a combination of a maximum reimbursement, which might barely pay to get the tow boat off the dock, or only applicable in circumstances where the ultimate liability to the insurance company would be higher, such as a potential sinking.

The unlimited coverage from BoatUS, doesn't care how often you call or for what (for the most part). Out of fuel, relocate for certain service, soft grounding, disabled, can't retrieve the anchor (I've seen a stinkpotter do that one). Although, I've often wondered if one would be cancelled, if they called too often.

Re: Best Boat Insurance Companies?

I am a 40-year customer of Amica and they have my homeowners and auto policies. They covered my new-to-me 1968 28-footer, moored in Salem MA, for
- agreed-value of $8,000 with $500 deductible
- $300K liability
- $300K Uninsured Boater
- $5K medical payments
- $250 Personal Effects (damage / theft)
for a $325 premium (net, after dividend).

No survey was required. They were competitive with both Progressive (which was a little less) and Boat US (highest and required a survey). I chose Amica over Progressive due to outstanding service over the years; but all quotes were in the same reasonable range.

Re: Best Boat Insurance Companies?

Ok so I just quoted Boats U.S.

My impression was perhaps that their insurance is better tailored to actual boat ownership. For example it's comforting to see the fuel spill coverage listed out as a main feature.

However I find my quote from them odd and was hoping people could comment.

Boating Liability - 300k
Fuel and other Spill - 854k
Medical payments - 1k (??)
Supplemental Family member payment - 25K
Uninsured boater protection - 300k
Commercial Towing - 250/500
Hull Coverage - 8k (purchase price)

So while it's great to have spill coverage what the hell do I need a 854k for? My boat has 15 gallons of diesel...on the other hand it only offers 1k in medical payments per person per incident??

Medical is my big fear. Am I missing something?

In relation to some other discussion I don't see need for a survey (EDIT: They ask for a self survey question and pictures) but they limited the coverage to the purchase price although I put in a higher value (I'd like to think I've added some value)

The premium is $457/year
