Stolen from a signature block:

"This new ship here is fitted according to the reported increase of knowledge among mankind. Namely, she is cumbered end to end with bells and trumpets and clocks and wires. It has been told to me she can call voices out of the air or the waters to con the ship while her crew sleep. But sleep though lightly. It has not yet been told to me that the sea has ceased to be the sea." --Rudyard Kipling

No kidding. It's really easy to set a course on a small screen chartplotter and miss things like small islands, fish traps, rocks, etc. It's something you need to think about when using a limited screen view device. Just plotting waypoints without looking at a small scale chart is inviting disaster.

OK, I can understand making a mistake entering a course on a GPS. But shouldn't someone have been on watch? Unless the weather was really bad, how could they miss seeing England? And if the weather was that bad, shouldn't they have been closely monitoring the GPS screen zoomed in on their location?

I think there's more to this story.

Its unreal. Complete reliance on modern technology with complete disregard for dead reckoning, noon sightings, any sort of fixes, ect. ect. For gods sakes charts show these things called islands. Really sad. What a waste.
