Re: Waterspouts Over Lake Michigan

Years ago, when in navy A school on shores of Lake Mich. just south
of Kenosha we would occasionally see water spouts on lake
(not as impressive as ones in article) Locals, who worked in the large brick naval hospital, did'nt seem to worry saying they never come on shore...well I did enough worrying for all of them as we
lived in old flimsy wood WWII barricks!

You see them, the locals see them, everyone with eyes in the area saw them but - "The National Weather Service did not see rotation in the storm clouds on radar, thus no official tornado warning was issued." Okay then, what are they?

Re: Waterspouts Over Lake Michigan

On Tuesday it was hot, muggy and windless. Wednesday we saw a bit of relief and later some rains came. Thursday was waterspout day over Lake Michigan. Friday the temps were almost 40 degrees colder than Tuesday with winds 12-20 knots out of the north. Rough sailing on the lake.

They say in Chicago, if you don't like the weather, just wait ten minutes. And now my thoughts are turning to Frosty the Snowman. Why am I still here?

Re: Waterspouts Over Lake Michigan

Was sailing from Beckwith island to Penetang on Georgian Bay Thursday evening heading Southwest. Nasty passage, not really sailing just skidding about the Lake. To make the trip even more uncomfortable the coast guard kept going on about waterspouts being spotted on Georgian Bay. Not the nice sail I was hoping for to end our vacation.

Water spouts
Quote:
Fair weather waterspouts usually form along the dark flat base of a line of developing cumulus clouds. This type of waterspout is generally not associated with thunderstorms. While tornadic waterspouts develop downward in a thunderstorm, a fair weather waterspout develops on the surface of the water and works its way upward. By the time the funnel is visible, a fair weather waterspout is near maturity. Fair weather waterspouts form in light wind conditions so they normally move very little. If a waterspout moves onshore, the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning, as some of them can cause significant damage and injuries to people. Typically, fair weather waterspouts dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, and rarely penetrate far inland

You cant see a water spout on radar because there is no water in a waterspout. The grey is condensation caused by the lowering of pressure in the waterspout.

2 years ago, late Sept, we dodged 7 water spouts in an hour period while headed to Chicago. Sweet!

Re: Waterspouts Over Lake Michigan

Mark, apparently there is sufficient moisture to see the change in cloud rotation, which clearly indicated the presence of a tornado over the water.

I think you might find the inside is like cloud or fog. And they dont show on radar. Just rain etc

People naturally think its water sucked up from the surface into the vortex. But its condensation.
