Yep, has to be done in the presence of the furler--you have to run the line around and then splice it. I did this several years back on a Hood furler and it was made much easier by the video that Sailnetter Knothead made to walk me through it. You can see it here

Thanks to all for advice, especially the videos. Over the years I have spliced many 3 strand lines, tapering the splice until it nearly disappeared and finished with a 'whipped' (was going to say 'whipping'...decided against) end.
After viewing the 'you tube' I'm going to pick up a fid and line and surprise my friend....a.k.a. friend with a boat.

this is a good video. I use Samson trophy braid as it is a bit rougher and does not slip on the drum. very easy to splice.
