Gift ideas?

Hi,
Starting to put my Christmas list together. Does anyone have any good gift ideas for sailors? Anything you have received for the boat that you really like, or wish someone would get for you? I am thinking up to the $250 range.

Thanks for any ideas you can offer!

Stacey

Re: Gift ideas?

Just got one of these tablet holders for my birthday...nice simple product that brings several really good iPad apps to the helm.

Re: Gift ideas?

Gift card for West Marine or a generic gift card that can be used anywhere.

Re: Gift ideas?

I would suggest a hand bearing compass. Though probably no longer in the modern day electronic sailor's bag of gear, it is an extremely useful tool for navigation; at one time absolutely indispensable to sailors.
Though a bit above your budget, I splurged a few years back and bought the "stabilized" binoculars. Thinking they were probably a gimmick, I made sure I could return them, but they are indeed the "real deal" and worth every penny.
One of the best features is that you can buy a more powerful set than non-stabilized and they are still lighter weight. The recognized maximum for small craft use is 8X35/50 but a 10X50 set of stabilized is just fine. I've not tried the 16 power so I'm not sure they would be useful.
The stabilized binoculars have now become one of my most used and cherished navigation tools, never beyond easy access, when underway.

Bucket of polish and waxes; headlamp; handheld VHF; automatic inflating life vest.

Re: Gift ideas?

You can't go wrong with a West Marine gift card.

Otherwise you risk what just happened to me.

"Hey honey, I bought us a grill for the sailboat!"
"No! Cancel that order -- that's what I'm getting you for Christmas."
"Um, okay. Thanks - it's a great idea for a present."

Re: Gift ideas?

Sport-a-seats - we like them much better than the regular cockpit cushions.

Re: Gift ideas?

A few gifts I've received that I really enjoyed are:

Monogrammed towel set with the boat name and nautical theme (I know, it sounds tacky, but it's still nice!)

High-powered rechargeable LED flash light (you can never have too many on board, especially the ones with the focused beam that can be used for a searchlight)

Nautical books (plenty to choose from)

And one of the best was a bag of stuff bought cheap from a camping store (some meals, hand warmers, folding knife, waterproof matches, glow sticks, hat, water bottle and a whole bunch of other cheap stuff I can't remember. It was fun though.)
