remove cove stripe - yeah or nay

Got a 25' sailboat navy hull, white waterline stripe, white deck, red bottom paint with gold lettering and a gold cove stripe.

Since I got the boat, my instinct was that there were too many colors going on for a small boat and - esp. as the lettering and cove stripe are different shades of gold, I thought I'd remove the cove stripe this winter for a cleaner look.

Some people I tell agree with me. The others [the traditionalist?] think a sailboat should always have a cove stripe, and most do.

So, is this just a matter of taste? I thought the purpose of the cove stripe was to make a boat look slimmer, but on a 25' boat with 3+' of freeboard there's not much to slim.

Make all the strips the same color. Blue with white stripes always looks really nice.

Re: remove cove stripe - yeah or nay

I have strong feelings about stripes but I'd have to see a pic of the boat.
3' of freeboard on a 25' boat is a lot of freeboard. Sounds like that stripe might be needed.

Take a picture of the side and use Paintbrush or another program to color over the cove stripe. That will give you a sense of how the boat would look.

Actually, if you have the timme, take a few pictures from different angles.

Re: remove cove stripe - yeah or nay

The cove strip can do a nice job of accentuating a sheer line, or visually 'correct' a slightly off sheer.. and can certainly reduce the visual height.

I'd keep the cove stripe but match the boot strip and cove colours.. Dark blue and (uniform) gold for name and stripes would look pretty good.. alternatively both stripes white.

What boat?

I removed them to replace but decided I liked it better without, reaction from others has been about 50/50, still got 2 rolls of new tape should I change my mind.

Those are a pretty classic combination.

I would lose the red bottom and go grey. Fielder's choice, but its too much for me. The current red would make a good signal color that the next coat is wearing thin.

As for the cove, its seems you find the color combo to be too much. Therefore, I would change it. There is no right answer. I would not, however, remove it altogether. Use vinyl for the cove, so you can easily change it again, if you like.

Re: remove cove stripe - yeah or nay

I got rid of all my stripes, even the boot, and love the clean look. Go to my page and see what no boot stripe looks like. I saw another boat coming towards me with just a white hull and trinidad red bottom, a few inches show'n, and had an instant crush. This coming from a guy who had a jade green hull and purple pin and boot stripe 20 years ago, but I was in my 20's.
