Let's be careful out there, eh?

This happened less than a mile from us, well charted rock/reef surrounded by a large kelp bed at the NW corner of Obstruction Island. Father and son, 30' sailboat, happened just after dark, hit the rocks and decided to see what happened on the flood tide in the morning. Cabin filled with water before the boat floated, rescued by vessel assist. No one injured. Boat uninsured.

*Well charted rock
*Surrounded by kelp
*No plan other than a "wait and see"
*No insurance

Yep all those things match up to the end result..... Sad really.....

Re: Picture = 1000 words

According to the story I read it's the owner's responsibility to have it removed, I'm guessing that he hopes tonights storm (35-55 kts) will take care of it for him.

On a historical note, Cpt. Vancouver almost lost his ship in almost the same location during storm while he was sightseeing around here, the anchor that he lost there was recovered by divers several years ago. Not sure if he had insurance or not either, but I'm reasonably sure he wasn't signed up for Vessel Assist:-))

That was my initial thought. There are lots of those "warning" place names that I would instinctively stay away from, at least at night.

Obstruction Island

Cape Disappointment

Cape Fear

Deception Pass

False Narrows

Danger Reef

Race Rocks

Who can add to the list?

I, myself, personally intend to continue being outspoken and opinionated, intolerant of all fanatics, fools and ignoramuses, deeply suspicious of all those who have "found the answer" and on my bad days, downright rude.

Whale Rock

The lesson from the Icarus story is not about human failing.
It is a lesson about the limitations of wax as an adhesive.
If you have an engineering problem solve it.
