crack in cockpit sole of Catalina 22, how serious?

Not my boat (yet). Present owner has had her for several years, in this same condition. Says there is very little flexing but a small amount of water does go through.

How serious a problem are we looking at? The boat is an '87, is there a wood core under there that's going to be rotten?

Could a layer of fiberglass mat over the entire sole put the whole thing to rest?

Re: crack in cockpit sole of Catalina 22, how serious?

I can't remember from my C22 if it is wood core there. If it is it will be wet. The question is why did it happen in the first place? If it is from flexing, it must have failed under the floor. I would try to figure out why it happened b/f repairing.

If you haven't bought it yet - don't. There are lots of small boats on the market that are ready to sail. Sailing is WAY more fun than fixing stuff.

That pic looks like someone tried to repair the crack at least once before. My bet is that water has been getting in to the wood underneath (and there is almost certainly wood core or underlayment) for years. I would be very surprised if there wasn't any rot.

Re: crack in cockpit sole of Catalina 22, how serious?

I suspect that the water intrusion occured first through an apparently insignificant crack and then, after the wood core deterioated, the big crack resulted from the flexing of the unsupported fiberglass.

The best repair, in my opinion, would be to cut out the top layer, remove and repalce the damaged core and reglass over the replaced top layer. If the resulting cosmetic surface is not perfect, a cockpit flooring matt might suffice.

I bought one that was rock solid last year. I got it for a song. They are plentiful.

I don't think my cockpit floor has any wood in it.

Even so, I think it shuld be a simple fix. It is accessable from the cabin so look.

Very active Catalina 22 owners association. I would look around there.

Or just drill a hole to see if there is rotten wood in there. I am betting solid glass.

If so it is an easy fix.

Well, winter is coming. If you are looking for a DIY project and the guy wants to sell it to very cheap, like a nominal sum - go for it. This boat will become a serious do not wanter, hard to sell. Most buyers for the boat are low time sailors looking for their first boat, not that it isn't a great boat for any sailor. These buyers aren't looking to work on the boat, they are looking for sail away condition. This boat is not sail away. it has a serious defect. I tell you this to help you understand your correct negotiating position.

That's the first thing I want to do when I see it in person. I can just slither back under there from the cabin, right?

You should be able to put your head under the seats and look around. You may have to move the galley, or the panel between the dinette and the gas locker under the seat. But its simple. You have to see under there before you can make an offer so make sure the seller is ready with a flashlight and gives you access
