Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

The whole thing is pretty surreal [ marked by the intense irrational reality of a dream; also : unbelievable ]

The decision to cross in front.

The fact that he is/was a captain in the Royal Navy.

Pleading Not Guilty.

But the best bits come out of the mouth of the defense lawyer. He asked the officer in charge of the tanker why he did not stop and back up?

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

Just leaves you scratching your head at such a ridiculously stupid move. What TH could he possibly have been thinking? He should be very thankful no one was killed. Those darned big anchors always get in the way!

Well, since he was in a race, it's probably "I want to win."

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

To give the beneifit of the doubt.... I suppose it's possible - surely not likely, but possible, that the entire crew was focused inside the boat, the large asymm blocked the view and they weren't fully aware of how close they were. I see no attempt of any sort of avoidance measures taken. They were probably wondering why the sail was suddenly collapsing (pressure wave from approaching bow??) and the freighter certainly did sound the horn, so as unlikely as it may seem, perhaps they simply weren't aware.

Who in their right mind would knowingly attempt such a crossing?.. I get fits if those guys are less than 1/4 mile away....

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

Even though its old I want to know who thought it was a good idea to have a race in an active commercial ship channel? A lack of common sense on the race organizers. You can't cure stupid.

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

It's the Solent - probably the epicenter of sailing in Britain, if not Europe.

They manage to hold the Admirals Cup there without anyone getting run down by ships.

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

Who is suing whom? Surely the tanker didn't suffer damages and from just that video the sailboat doesn't appear to have much of a case. What was the outcome of the trial?
