Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

They are lucky they are alive. On my worst day, I wouldn't have done anything that stupid on my boat.

On the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

Been around a while.

Idiot.

trim the spinny dammit, you're still an idiot but might have succeeded in your imbecilic idea of crossing tanker's bow.

Rules? open water, room to maneuver (not in this video, one would guess)?? ship gives way (assuming sail is stupid enough to provoke a close-quarters situation in the first place). ship constrained by draft, channel, fairway/TSS, tethered tugs, etc? sail gives way, ship is supposed to show day shapes, the meaning of which would be lost on most sailors by day, as possibly (though less likely??) would the red-white-red "restricted maneuverability" nav lights at night.

Actually, I don't see day shapes here, but do hear the danger signal from ship. this may be sailor's only leg to stand on. Pretty lame leg though..

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

As overboard said, this is old. Large vessel was restricted to channel, channel was noted in racing instructions, etc. Absolutely no excuse on the part of the sailboat. Nobody died.

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

I wonder if there are any photos of the boat 'After'... how much hull damage was done?

Re: Tanker Dismasts Sailboat

Court huh? Hopefully it is a criminal trial with the sailboat captain being charged for scratching the anchor.
