Two large holes in transom

Hey guys...

I just started sailing this year.. and picked up a little dinghy sailboat for a hundred bucks off kijiji....

along with a drain plug.. there are two large 3" holes in the transom with 2 hinged flap doors just above the drain hole... what are they for? they are held shut with a bungie type line on the inside on the floor.... but still kinda leak...

Can I glue them shut... ?

Any incite would be appreciated.

Cheers

Re: Two large holes in transom

Bailers? even when pulled shut......they seem to let more water in than out... especially when weight is aft....

I took a sailing course this summer and none of the instructional boats ie 420's... TOPAZ's had these holes on them... the self bailers were in the middle on the floor...

Am I doing something wrong? other than not sailing fast enough? lol

thanx again for any help

Cheers

Re: Two large holes in transom

Prop, what kind of boat are we talking about?

Barring evidence to the contrary, over has it right- self-bailers. aging shock-cords that have lost their tension and worn-out seals will mean that they leak- it's pretty typical. don't glue them shut, just renew them.

It's 5 o'clock somewhere:

Re: Two large holes in transom

What you got there is actually a fishing dingy made by Master. Paddle over to a school of herring and open the baiter ports. The fish rush in. Close the flaps and go fishing.

Re: Two large holes in transom

Our 505 has those in addition to self bailers. They sit above the waterline on the transom (normally the whole transom should be above the waterline), so water doesn't come in through them. The shock cord holds them closed, but you can open them to let water out.

Look at almost any photo of a 505 and you'll see them.

They also make it easy to drain the water when putting the boat onto a trailer or up on a dock.

I'm no longer participating on SailNet.

Re: Two large holes in transom

While they may leak a bit now, they'll leak out a whole lot more if you ever manage to swamp/fill the boat, and you'll be glad for it.
