Changing the name of a boat without a name???

I recently purchased a 1972 Ericson 32 project boat. I cannot find the old name of the boat anywhere. It is not pained on the hull or mentioned in any paperwork that came with the boat. I know there are strict rules one must follow when changing the name of the boat but what about when the original name is unknown? I donít want to anger the Gods of the deep. Do I just consider the process to be halfway done and pick up in the middle or do I treat it like you would the naming of a new boat? BTW, I believe the boat has been without a name for at least 10 years, maybe more.

Invite some friends over, get a bottle of rum and make up some clever incantations and drink/spill some rum and have a party. That should cover all the bases. What could possibly go wrong?:D

I would think if it doesn't have a name it can't be considered changing the name.

although I do agree with the above, drink rum and party, make the party goers come up with a name. if you're lucky "topless" will be one of the favorites. LOL

Unless the yacht was documented, and the documentation continued, the "old name" doesn't matter. Nor does/would it matter if you are not going to re-document the boat. If you do not find a documentation number somewhere aboard where it cannot be removed, it was likely never documented and so not an issue.

You need to get a black cat, carry it under a ladder then throw it at and break a mirror.

Really dude, just put the new name on your boat then kick back with a beer or a drink of your choice.

Drinking rum will be a requirement and will be the one beverage I will not leave port without. I'm not superstitious but my boat might be. I've only just met her and haven't learned her likes and dislikes yet.

It still had registration numbers and/or HIN. It always had a name per Neptune.

Dont mess around, do a denaming ceremony then a renaming ceremony.

Not sure I know any virgins. haha I could always post a craigslist ad. "Wanted: Virgin to pee in my boat" that's not creepy at all.
