HELP: Being relocated to Las Vegas?

After a quarter century in Florida, I am being relocated to Las Vegas. Where do I find sailing. California? I'm very active in PHRF racing and do some one-design racing. I will definitely need my saltwater fix on a regular basis. Also, are there any active sailing-oriented clubs? And by active I mean racing and cruising. HELP!

Yep, Lake Mead. Unless it has dried up even more since I was last there. Many of the marinas had closed because the water level dropped so much.

And if you do sail there, look out for those deformed carp. Disturbing creatures.

Lake sailing? Really? Is that my only option? If so, I'll have to break out the old Windmill on a trailer. Getting a little old to dance around on that boat when tacking.

You might have to tack frequently but,

You could do SoCal, it's 4.5 hrs to Newport Beach. Lake Mead is very close about 30/45 minutes. I'd also check Lake Havasu better water levels than Mead.

Re: HELP: Being relocated to Las Vegas?

I was assuming SoCal. Just trying to get more info on where. And where active.

SoCal...Its active all along the coast...Newport Beach, San Diego, Dana Point, Catalina, Long Beach, San Pedro, Oceanside, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, etc...NB and SD seem to be the hubs for racing if you are interested in that.

Re: HELP: Being relocated to Las Vegas?

All the harbors in So Cal have active racing fleets. from Las Vegas, newport beach is the closest, Dana point and long beach are only a little further. to get to other harbors you will have to go thru LA traffic, its is easy to get on as crew as most boats are looking for experienced people. Long beach is the windiest. the further south you go the less wind. Long beach is a big harbor with a break water and a few big ships. Newport is a very nice small bay with homes on the water and never a place to park your car. they race the small one design in the bay and PHRF and others in the ocean. Dana point is a small harbor with little place to sail in the bay but is is only a very short sail to the start line in the ocean and no big ship traffic and very smooth lighter winds. Dana point is the laziest and most relaxed harbor, the furthest from LA with plenty of car parking.
