47-foot sailboat yacht worth $495,000 stolen

Happened in Hawaii...

Big Isle man arrested after stolen yacht runs aground | West Hawaii Today, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii

A Big Island man allegedly broke into The Corsaire, a 47-foot yacht, in Honokohau Small Boat Harbor, packed his guitar and luggage aboard, and then attempted to steal it. The man reportedly asked a fisherman to help him get out of the slip, but only made it as far as 2 to 3 miles north to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park before running the vessel aground Sunday, said Laura Mascari, the boatís co-owner.

Richard Sherwood was arrested and charged with first-degree theft, a class B felony thatís punishable by up to 10 years in prison. He appeared Wednesday at a preliminary hearing in District Court, where Judge Joseph P. Florendo determined enough probable cause exists to prosecute the case and move it over to 3rd Circuit Court, said Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Kaua Jackson.

It looks like this theft was legitimate, but it seems the boat was massively over insured. There are other Vagabond 47's for sale in the 150-200,000 range.

Designed by William Gardner??? Non sailing proof reader!!

William (Bill) Garden, perhaps!

Anyhow the owners will be laughing all the way to..... if indeed they get their replacement coverage. As they say on Dragon's Den... that's a gross over evaluation...

The article indicates the insurance company has already written off the boat. I would assume that it is a declared value policy, in which case actual value has little to do with it.

Could be a Force 50 (Bill Garden ,a big Porpoise.) too bad it's not steel.but the insurance co wouldn't have written it off so easy. Saves broker fees.

I wonder how much they paid the guy to steal/total the boat?

47-foot sailboat yacht worth $495,000 stolen

I know of this boat and I know the owner, Laura. The boat is absolutely stunning. Refit to top notch. I mentioned in a thread awhile back, maybe it was on CF. It's a Vagabond 47 and was for sale around $299k the last I saw. I heard rumors that the cost of refit was $750K. It had built in humidors and custom made liquor cabinets. It was a beauty.

"Built in humidors"? That explains it.

Re: 47-foot sailboat yacht worth $495,000 stolen

Does anyone successfully steal a sailboat and escape on the ocean these days?

We keep seeing news about them stolen and run aground hours later, with some clown onboard. I'd like to hear about someone who stole a 50' ketch and survived off fishing and minimal supplies and lived a life off the grid at some remote island for decades and erased his past. That'd be so much better, at the expense of the boat owners.
