I was incorrect. Data. When I switched to the iPhone I lost my unlimited plan. During the sailing season I notice a definite spike in data.

You may want to try using it with airplane mode turned on. If the nav app you're using downloads the chart to the phone, it may be able to use GPS without enabling data. Also it may save your battery over using Bluetooth but I can't say for sure. I don't know what the consumption difference is between BT and GPS.

On my iPad I turn off WiFi and 3G, which I guess is the same as putting it in Airplane mode. I guess I can save a step and just do that next time.

I do it because the battery lasts longer, but I suppose it saves data too. I never run over on my iPad so I didn't give that much thought.

GPS doesn't use data. In a phone or tablet with built-in GPS the implementation is called assisted GPS (A-GPS). The device has a real full GPS. The phone or tablet "knows" the location of the cell tower it is connected to as part of network interaction (thus no data) and uses that as a seed to speed up the GPS position determination. It still works offshore, well out of cell phone range. It just takes longer to get a position solution.

I don't know if the plug-in GPS devices for WiFi only devices are just GPS or A-GPS.

On iOS devices airplane mode turns off the WiFi and the GPS. You can turn WiFi back on manually but not GPS. This is a pain offshore because the phone is desperately hunting for a cell phone signal it won't find and burns through battery kind of fast. Still, it works and if you're plugged into boat power isn't so bad.

Re: Phones Apps

SVA - have you tested that? I ask because it seems Google Maps could find me in Airplane mode but I haven't tested it otherwise.

To be clear, this is only for the initial fix, as the device would know which satellites it should be looking for. Otherwise, it just takes a few more seconds to figure it out. Thereafter, it works just as fast, with or without.

In the harsh marine environment, something is always in need of repair. Margaritas fix everything.

I have. There is no question.

Apple will tell you the same thing. See the Apple discussion of airplane mode.

If you're in airplane mode Google maps will use the last recorded position.

Interesting. Thank you.

Maybe you can clear up, while you're here, why, on my return flight from Florida after helping Melissa deliver her boat, my Garmin app recorded the flight until approaching PHL? I had no external GPS, airplane mode was on. I may have forgotten to turn off "record track" in the Garmin app but without a GPS to connect to, how did I end up with a 1400+ nm recorded track of our flight path? According to Melissa I should not have been able to connect to the GPS used by the plane.

Re: Phones Apps

That's interesting, Donna. I've always wanted to know where I was on a flight, it would be neat if the GPS would actually work.
