The Global Challenge

Living in the Frozen North can be kinda tough, if you are an avid sailor. We look at about five months a year with the lakes iced over. The withdrawal process from not being able to go sailing can be severe, complete with full body twitching and shaking is not uncommon. It helps if we can have something to do to simulate sailing, or involve our selves in some aspect of the sport.

At this time in the year 2000, I was getting myself ready for the ice to come, it is good to prepare your self early. I had already gone out and picked up an old rocking chair and I was about to bust one of the rockers. That is when I ran into the "BT Global Challenge" on the internet.

A lot of you will already be familiar with the Global Challenge, some perhaps not. It all started with Chay Blyth. As I remember it, he wanted to be the first to sail around the world alone, maybe it was first alone non-stop, but having been beaten at that one, he decided that he would be the first to do it solo going the wrong way, east to west, sailing into the prevailing winds and currents. He did that in 1971, I think. He then decided that others might like to have the challenge of doing the same thing. After a lot of work and promotion the first event was held in 1992/93, then again in 1996/97 and 2000/01.

Tomorrow, October 3ed, or today depending on where you live, I think at 14:00 GMT, 12 - 72 ft. boats will leave Portsmouth England. The boats will all have a professional captain and a crew of amateurs, people just like you and me, some may not have ever sailed before.

In the winter of 2000/01 I found it to be a lot more fun following the BT boats around the world, living vicariously through the skippers and crews, than pitching around in a broken rocking chair under a cold water shower, tearing up hundred bills, to satisfy my sailing withdrawal. Especially since I do not have a lot of $100 bills.
