Re: New Years Resolutions: Sailing-Related Goals for 2014

1. Send an email using my SSB and Pactor modem: I have never used them before
2. Download a OPC weather analysis chart via SSB
3. 3 week cruise to MV in June-use my windvane to steer: never actually used it before
4. Figure out a way to lure my son to the boat for a weekend sail.

Re: New Years Resolutions: Sailing-Related Goals for 2014

Sailing related? Everything is sailing related?

Cruise between Mount Desert Island, Eastport and Portland. Endless possibilities. We often don't know until we head down to the boat.

No major cruises. More sailing time, for sure. Not as many family weddings and anticipated births to schedule this coming season, Ha!

A potentially long list of "loose ends" will get attention.

I would like to have the boat's wiring looking like Mainesail did it! We will see how far that gets.

Have a great 2014!

Sail more! I especially set this goal once I added up how much my boat costs me and found that I spend more on it than the house (including utilities).

Resolution for this year is the same as always .... Try not to make any resolutions so that I am not disappointed when they are not kept!!!!! just trying to keep it real still ... and of course a lot of sailing after new rigging is done .....

Re: New Years Resolutions: Sailing-Related Goals for 2014

Before the boat goes in the water, I hope to have all the topside decks and cockpit painted and looking like new. Also have a leak to find and fix, probably some of the toe rail screws need sealing, or maybe a stanchion bolt.

Still have to repair the port rub rail where some idiot hit me with a four foot wake while I was fueling up and slammed me into the fuel dock pilings. If I ever find the bastard I'll sink his boat.

When warmer weather arrives, I have a pretty full work schedule, with music jobs nearly every day. But, I have scheduled a coupe two-week sails for summer, plus a dozen or two 2 to 3-day sails in the Chesapeake.

Hopefully, when 2015 arrives, if all my body parts are still semi functional, I hope to be the oldest person to ever traverse the east coast ICW single handed from the upper Chesapeake to Key West. My wife says if I do she's going to divorce me, and I told her not to make any promises she doesn't intend to keep. What the Hell, I've always wanted to be a live-aboard, especially in the Florida Keys.

Cheers,

Gary

Sail where the wind takes us, on the winds schedule.

Never miss a perfect sailing day.

Look at the sky, the wind, the birds, the waves, listen to the water rushing by while sitting on the lee rail, tell tails back, Ötake none of this for granted.
How lucky we all are.

Re: New Years Resolutions: Sailing-Related Goals for 2014

Not quite sure if I made any resolution when I started 2013 except spending more time on Lake Ontario fishing salmon after trading in the boat I had for one slightly larger and configuring it to my liking and finding other exotic locations for upcoming warm water scuba diving trips. Nevertheless, not only did I live up to them, but my GF also decided to pursue her pleasure craft operator's card as well as getting certified, along with myself, for operating VHF Marine radios. Well, one thing led to another and I finally decided to pursue a dream of eventually being able to combine Carribean scuba diving with sailing (live aboard). So, in the summer months, my GF, myself and another scuba diving couple registered for a fall Basic Sailing cruising course which was completed in mid-October and, in late Nov 2013, I purchased a C&C 27 to start building our sailing and liveaboard experience before we eventually upgrade to something larger.

So in terms of 2014 sailing resolutions:
1) complete the web-based coastal navigation course (already on the go) by end of Feb 2014;
2) devote some time toward boat related off season projects (attempt to fix a leak of the compass for the binnacle or purchased a new one, re-install it and in the process move the chartplotter from binnacle to arch), replace the hanks of one of the headsails with slugs so it can be mounted on the furler, VHF radio and additional GPS in the cabin, etc;
3) spend most of my summer weekends and free time to sail/live aboard in order to build on experience to support an Intermediate Cruising course (bareboat certification) during summer of 2015.
