New Years Resolutions: Sailing-Related Goals for 2014

Here are mine:

1. Finish teaching myself Celestial Navigation;

2. Learn about and obtain general license for Ham Radio; and

3. Sail directly to Block Island/Eastern L.I. in longer coastal hop from Norfolk or Cape May.

The steps I have taken so far:

1. Bought all materials and started reading.
2. Checked out library books, read licensing requirements and started reading.
3. Continuing to improve boat to make it more seaworthy and capable.

What are your Sailing-Related Goals for 2014?

My sailing goals:

Learn a lot and have fun.

Pretty much the same as 2013.

We both got our license. I decided that I won't cross the line into true radio geekdom as long as I don't memorize my call sign or put a 10-foot whip antennae on my car.

Now we've decided to go for the Extra Class license.

Still not a geek though.

Hey,

My goals are:
-Get the new-to-me boat into good condition (some cosmetics and updated / new gear)
-Sell the old boat (O'day 35)
-Spend more nights aboard than last year (spent about 10 nights aboard over the course of the season)
-Do some more casual racing

More time on the water.

There's too much uncertainty in my life to make a resolution with any honesty.

I'll just say that I'd really, really like to solo around Delmarva this summer. I'd like to do it with my SPOT transmitter working, and I'd like to host a little send-off BBQ at my house before I go.

If that fails, I'll settle for more time on the water.

Re:I've resolved to make our anchorages a little quieter in 2014.

When our kids were learning to talk, we’d play that silly ‘sounds’ games.

“What sound does a dog make?”…’Woof’, they’d mimic.

“What does a cow make?”,….'Moooooooooooooooo’, they’d moan.

And we had a family favorite. ”What sound does a sailboat make?” … ’ssssssssssssssssssssssss’, they would hiss, softly, with a smile.

So for our two sailing terriers, we have installed Citronella Bark Collars. Amazing! One bark, and they were transformed. Now I’m confident we can eliminate any barks in a quiet anchorage, or under sail.

And I will find a permanent spot to mount a solar panel. These improvements should cut down on our motoring, decrease ‘woof’, and increase our, ”ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss”.

Happy New Year. 'ssssssssssssssssssss'

log more miles under the keel
learn how to use most of the garman's functions
sail more than a few miles from home port
get the rest of the boat squared away

My goals in this order.
1. Do a rain dance...a long one. Lake Ray Hubbard (Texas) is nearly 7 feet low.
2. After the rain dance proves successful, haul the boat and do bottom job.
3. Sail more often.

Happy New Year!
