In the "groove"

What is the definition of "the groove", as in a boat having a wide groove? (referencing this from the helmsman''s point of view)

In the "groove"

The ''groove'' is refering to a combination of sail trim and course at which the boat is making its best VMG. Depending on the design of the sails and the boat, the groove may be a degree or two wide or it may be as much as 5 or more degrees in width. It is more typical to design keels and sails for a narrow groove when dealing with a higher performance boat, where the steering is generally more surgical and the gains from being in the groove (vs out of the groove) are much greater. On a modern boat, being in the groove can often yield speed gains of a half knot or more.
