Pete Seeger died today

Pete Seeger died last night. He was 94 years old. I am sure all the older folks here know his music and activism, but he was an avid sailor as well. He was so disturbed by the pollution on the Hudson River that he built the Clearwater, a 108 foot wooden gaff rigged sloop that is a replica of the boats that used to sail up and down the Hudson River. The purpose of the boat was to get people out on the river and see the beauty of the river and has inspired an entire organization. This organization has helped clean up the river and it is now swimable for most of it's length. He also built the Woody Guthrie and donated it to the Beacon Sloop club and they take people out on the river for free every week night out of Beacon, NY.

Pete was active up to his death. He did a lot of work at the local grade schools in the music department. Showed up at all the local festivals and sang any time there was a crowd. He had a real energy that was hard to resist. If he happened to be in town he never begrudged someone wanting a photograph. He will be missed, especially here in Beacon where he has become the entire towns adopted grandfather. He has now joined his beloved wife Toshi who died last year.

Re: Pete Seeger died today

Did not know he was a sailor.

A legend on the world of music and popular culture. The loss in not only an American one but one for the world even if his songs will stay with us forever:

Re: Pete Seeger died today

He had a great twisted sense of humor. I am sure he would like to be composted and put into a garden, so he can live on for ever.

Quote:
Lyrics from "In Dead Earnest"

If I should die before I wake,
All my bone and sinew take
Put me in the compost pile
To decompose me for a while.

Worms, water, sun will have their way,
Returning me to common clay
All that I am will feed the trees
And little fishes in the seas.

When radishes and corn you munch,
You may be having me for lunch
And then excrete me with a grin,
Chortling, "There goes Lee again."

'Twill be my happiest destiny
To die and live eternally
Heard this this morning in a replay of an interview with him.

OTOH, Seeger was an unrepentant Stalinist who praised the Hitler Stalin pact and derided Roosevelt for being a warmonger but after Hitler attacked Russia he reversed course. He failed to find anything wrong with Stalin until 1995 and even then didn't really apologize for supporting him. He supported Pol Pot, Mao, the Sandinistas and every bizarro leftist cult.

They say he was chopping wood a week ago. Thats the way to be.

The clearwater was right across from my boat on the Rondout and many many times we sailed right next to her. She really sailed too - I would see her tacking up the Hudson.

That is the Woodie Guthrie in the background.

Re: Pete Seeger died today

He was the best kind of American.

"Patriotism is supporting your country all the time, and your government when it deserves it." --American author Mark Twain (1835-1910)

From the Washington Post article:

From Guthrie, Mr. Seeger learned to express political and social criticism through music and song. Over time, dissent and left-wing expression became hallmarks of his artistic repertoire. During the anti-Communist “Red Scare” of the 1950s, he was called to testify before the House Un-American Activities Committee.

“I have sung in hobo jungles, and I have sung for the Rockefellers, and I am proud that I have never refused to sing for anybody,” he told the committee. “I have never done anything of any conspiratorial nature. ... I love my country very deeply.”

In 1955, the House Un-American Activities Committee began an investigation of Communist influence in professional entertainment and subpoenaed Mr. Seeger. He volunteered to discuss his music at length with the committee, and he offered to sing his songs. But he declined to answer questions about political associations or whether certain songs were sung at Communist gatherings, and he declined to invoke his constitutional right of protection from self-incrimination.

“I think these are very improper questions for any American to be asked, especially under such compulsion as this,” he said.

“I apologize for once believing Stalin was just a hard driver, not a supremely cruel dictator,” he told The Washington Post in 1994. “I ask people to broaden their definition of socialism. Our ancestors were all socialists: You killed a deer and maybe you got the best cut, but you wouldn’t let it rot, you shared it. Similarly, I tell socialists, every society has a post office and none of them is efficient. No post office anywhere invented Federal Express.”
