Get yourself a stethoscope with metal probe and listen at various points on the engine, transmission etc to isolate where the noise is coming from. You can also use a long screwdriver, broom handle etc instead go a stethoscope; hold the blunt end end tight to your (good if applicable) ear and probe with the other end. Just listening with an open engine cover can be deceiving. Be very careful that you don't get tangled up in anything that's moving ( pulley, belt, shaft etc) while probing.

Sounds like a damper plate. They run under $200.00 clams but take many hours to replace.... Not difficult, about a 4 on a scale of 10, but can be awkward because the bell housing has to come off to access it..

You know I was thinking that too, because I could hear it outside in the cockpit clearly. At first it sounded like it could be under the boat . Shivering thinking about getting into that water though.

Were you able to still drive the boat? Just wondering if this will eventually not go into gear. Currently mine shifts and drives it just makes noise at low rmp while in gear. Thanks

Had the same symptoms with a propeller blade slightly damaged!
Damage was so small that not visible when diving !
A tiny damage on a blade can cause big vibrations at low rpm

No. When the damping plate finally lets go, you lose all propulsion. I would strongly recommend checking it BEFORE running too much more (or at least before finding the cause of the problem). When ours blew, the springs sheared into many pieces and really banged around inside the engine. They lodged in the starter and burned out the starter, they tore up the bell housing, and they damaged the rear seal on the engine. It's really not the kind of thing you want to have happen when you're out, especially in bad weather.

While I certainly defer to MainSail's opinion, I'm a bit surprised that the damping plate would let go in the conditions you describe. I guess, once the metal is fatigued, it doesn't take much for it to break. I would have expected more violent conditions (e.g., sheets tangled in your prop, running the prop aground, lots of pounding due to steep chop, etc.) to have occurred at the same time.

I'll also tell you that getting the bell housing off on my engine (Universal M16) wasn't the easiest thing in the world, in part due to the way my engine compartment was laid out. It was easier to disconnect the engine and move it out of the engine compartment than to try to work on it in place. In the end, I chickened out and let the marina do the work.
