Panama to Key West: Best Delivery Route?

After the 2006 hurricane season, I'm making a direct "delivery type" passage from San Diego to Jax FL. Other than Panama, I plan to stop only in Key West, or maybe Cayman. I'm assuming the best route is via the Yucatan Channel, and not the Windward Passage on the eastern side of Cuba. I have a 48 foot steel pilothouse cutter that can handle the Caribbean in winter, but I'd prefer not to bash to windward to get to and through the Windward Passage.

Has anybody here made this passage? Any thoughts or suggestions?

I made a relaxed trip up from Belize, several stops on the Mexican coast, longer stop at Isla Mujeres, then straight to Key West. You are balancing the Gulf Stream current against the trades. But the real problem is not that, but Northers breaking through that far south. After you have that many miles under your keel, there should be little or no weather related issues you can't handle. Just remember to stay plenty far (i.e. >> 12 mi.) off the Cuban coast. And stick closely to the procedures when you get to Key West - the Customs and Coast Guard are pretty sticky in that part of the world, for obvious reasons. But if you stick to procedures and have a good attitude there will be no problems.

Panama to Key West

did a trip from Belize to Tortola last year wind on the nose the whole time in a cat, pretty challenging...Id take the Yucatan channel as currents and wind would be in your favor going that way...have fun and avoid Cuba

Thanks guys. I'll be doing this trip early next January. Beeline delivery to Panama, through, and aim her north.
