There are three I see that look like recreational sailboats that could have hit the bridge. My experience so far with the USCG has been very positive - they clearly wanted to make sure everyone is okay.

MD NRP is doing follow-up, probably because there was damage to the bridge.

Everyone has been very polite and other than a few minutes of my time there has been no intrusiveness.

If someone called about an incident and there was no follow-up at all what would you think?

Or maybe they called all eight documented vessels names "Auspicious" and tried to see who'd blush and cry?
Gee, maybe it's possible that they're trying to help someone by letting them know their boat is in distress. Does everything have to be a conspiracy?

Rt 50 (Fixed Bridge) @ Kent Narrows...really! That's 75 feet vertical clearance at center span... Mighty big vessel....

They're not talking about the Basquel bridge with the span up? Now that would be easy to hit one of the hanging lights if one isn't correcting for the swift current under the open span..

Well there is at least one whole network channel that lives off of inventing conspiracies, so yes it has to be. Well I will add my conspiracy: I think it has to do with your restaurant reviews, it is obviously retribution for a bad review!

Glad to hear your boat is ok, and was not involved. I for one am happy to hear that they are following up on it.

I was told the boat hit the center lights. Low steel is 65 ft, center is 75 but the lights hang down about 5 feet. Can't be my boat as my mast is 62, tricolor tops at 63, and even the VHF antenna is just under 65'. There are a goodly number of boats around here with sticks that high but not many shallow enough to make it through Kent Narrows.

Re: A phone call you don't want to receive

The other part of this story, is that SOMEBODY likely fouled their foulies when their stick hit the bridge!!

This is a nice outlook and you have a great attitude about everything that happened. I'm really glad it wasn't your boat. That's definitely near the top of the list of late night calls no one should get.

Re: A phone call you don't want to receive

High tide was around 3:31pm on the day in question with a height of about 1/2 foot..so IHOP high tide didn't reach MHW as measured by the USCG at the Rt 50 (fixed bridge)...so if the vessel that hit the center span bridge light must have been very close,if not, exceeded the 75 ft vertical clearance...

Charted Bridge Clearances

..just a matter of elimination of vessels with this air draft and water draft capable of navigating the 7 ft depths of the north channel at that particular time of day... I also suspect that the vessel in question may have picked up fuel at either Piney Narrows or Red Eyes waiting for the next opening for the Basquel bridge...
