[Roaring40]

All of Bernard Montessier's books are quite good. Alone in the Roaring 40's is another great one by Vito Dumas. One of my fav's though is Voyage of Madmen by Peter Nichols. Knox-Johnson & Montessier sail on in this book like only most people dream of.

Complete Sailor, The: Learning the Art of Sailing by David Seidman

A lot of peeps suggested this one. I'm a newbie, will be sailing for the 1st time in April - but in the mean time I've been reading up - was at a Phils Sailing Club meeting last night and someone mentioned to me about how at first there's a lot of terminolgy that I will not understand and "port" and "starboard" was mentioned - c'mon - In Sept/Oct I downloaded a whole lot of different pages about Sailing Terms, Sailing Glossay, List of Sailing Terms, etc... - I understand some basics but I could not comprehend the tems for sailing in different angles to the wind: Close-Hauled, Close REach, Beam Reash, Far Reach, etc. David Chapman's book has an excellent drawing and now I totally understand - I'd recommend that one

Just finished reading Tania Aebi's "Maiden Voyage" - awesome book that I got from this list of recommendations. I couldn't put it down - the sea, the island, the storms - a great read and of course ends with a happily ever after.

Booty...she also writes a monthly column in Lats & Atts magazine...very good...you might want to check out their archives!

Doesn't really end with a happily ever after, as I believe she is divorced... The book is very enlightening in that even with all the mistakes that she made, her initial lack of experience and knowledge, and her inability to keep the diesel engine working, she still made it. I think it is somewhat unfair that they disqualified her from her "solo" circumnavigation, because she had a passenger, who did little if anything to help sail the boat, for a short passage of about 80nm.

It was one of the big international sailing organizations... it says something about it in her book IIRC.
