I'm just a novice sailer but my vote goes to: John Rousmaniere's "The Annapolis Book of Seamanship. Been a really excellent reference for me. I'm enjoying seeing what other more experienced sailors are reading. Thanks, this site is terrific.

Good book for someone new to sailing and buying...

a used boat for the first time. Surveying Fiberglass Boats by Henry Mustin. He writes in a manner anybody can understand and explains what to look for and why. I think it costs $17.95 in paperback new, but I think you could get it used on Amazon. A real good resource for somebody getting ready to buy a boat and before committing to a survey.

Halfway through Yacht Design According to Perry. Good read. If you are interested in the origins of the Valiant 40/32/47/42, Islander 40, CT54, Tayana 37, Baba 40, Cheoy Lee 44, etc etc this is the book. Includes lots of line plans plus Perry's view on design issues (sheerlines, transoms, keels, etc). Also a bit of an autobiography.

Overthe Edge of the World

I recently finished reading "Over the Edge of the World" the story of Magellans voyage. It really humbles me to read about these exploits and what courage these men had to saill off with so little knowledge of what they were getting into. Anyway this is a great read for sailing or history buffs.
Everyone sailing the Chesapeake needs to read John Barth's "The Sotweed Factor'. I promise you will die laughing and learn a bit about the history of your beautiful playground. Also I highly recommend "Beautiful Swimmers". I've forgotten the authors name, but it is an informing and enjoyable book about calinectus sapaticuses.

In the historical fiction line along with O'Brien I have enjoyed pretty much anything by James L. Nelson. He has a nice small series based in the US Navy, such as it was, during the revolutionary war.
