Sir Francis Chichister has been mentioned previously, but the most amazing autobiography I have ever read is his "The Lonely Sea and The Sky", now sadly out of print, but absolutely worth the effort to track down. Half about his early days as a pilot, as well as the beginnings of the Trans-Atlantic Solo sailing race.

And I don't know if it counts as fiction or not (ahem), but I really enjoyed "The Incredible Voyage" by Tristan Jones. (He's kind of like Papillon - you never know quite whether to believe him or not...)

I seem to remember that earlier on in this thread, someone took it upon themselves to compile one list; it wasn't a spreadsheet, but it was all in one convenient list.

One of my favorite book growing up was 'First Lady' by Kay Cottee which describes her singlehand nonstop circumnavigation eastabout from Sydney, Australia and south of the five southernmost capes (Good Hope, Leeuwin, South-East Cape (Tasmania), South-West Cape (Stewart Island, NZ), and the Horn) west to east, commencing November 1987 in her Cavalier 37.

The book seems to be out of print but a number of used copies are floating around.

Endorse all the suggestions so far, and would add 'Tinkerbelle' by Robert Manry about an Atlantic crossing in a 13.5 foot boat, together with Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes and Adrift by Steve Callahan. A Seavagabond's World and The Long Way, both by Bernard Moitessier, never fail to enchant and inspire.

I agree with kairetu about both Tinkerbelle and The Long Way. My copy of the latter is beside me now and I wore out a paperback of Tinkerbelle when I was in school ( 40 years ago).

Great list off excelent books . I would like to add THE SEVEN LITTLE SISTERS by William Willis and THE WORST JOURNEY IN THE WORLD by Apsley Cherry Garrad which deals with the other half of the Shackleton expedition (ice is frozen water after all )
