Talking Friendship sloop racing! :D

Yesterday I went racing with my friend in Southwest Harbour on the Friendship sloop Gladiator!
There were 7 other sloops racing; Helen Brooks, Eden, Peregrine, Alice E, Surprise, Heritage, and Salatia. We started out behind a few of the boats but
we were to windward so we soon overtook them(The last boat we passed threw water balloons at us!). Gladiator was way ahead, but soon she started wallowing a little and Alice E, Helen Brooks and Surprise passed by. Heritage was coming up fast but we got going again and she ended up right behind us.
We were heading up the line as we headed for the last mark before the finish line, and soon were ahead of all boats except Helen Brooks who is rigged with a jib, stay sail, main topsail and main. She was ahead as we tacked around the last mark and headed for the finish line. Soon all the boats were heeling over well and Helen Brooks started to heel to far so the skipper had to ease her off a bit.
Her crew of two was hugely out-numbered by the 14 people aboard Gladiator.
We all stacked the windward rail and overtook Helen Brooks.
After a few hundred more feet we went over the finish line with the gun on the committee boat going off with a deafening bang. The first sailing race I had gone on was a success!
We tacked around, and head back past the other boats, we were going to Somes Sound(the only fjord on the eastern coast!).
I then got to steer for 1/2 an hour, although at first I steered horribly at first because I was so used to tillers, the skipper said that he expected that I would be a schooner captain someday. That was very pleasing to hear from someone who had been on boats all his life!
Anyway, the whole day was smashing and I hope you enjoyed reading about it!

Awesome.
My intro to sailing came on the Blackjack. A friendship also out of Southwest. Though he runs his business through Northeast Harbor. I love those boats!
