Volvo in Newport

What an assume weekend at the Volvo village at Fort Adams in Newport RI. Thank god the weather person could not have been any more wrong with the predictions. Both Saturday and Sunday the boats came out and played on a course 100 times bigger than the Americas cup boats a few years ago. But it made for a small difficulty, the course did not leave much boat spectator room and everyone on boats were trying to follow the race up and down, making for some crazy times with traffic and chop.

Re: Volvo in Newport

I watched the in-port race and the leg start. I was truly impressed with the sailing support I saw on TV from Newport. Wish I could have been there.

Re: Volvo in Newport

We volunteered with our (dare I say here) power boat to help with the race for the last 4 days (we've got one with a keel if that helps). I think I saw you Delta-T, good videos.

Unbelievable turn out in Newport both on and off the water. Mostly well behaved on the water with a few notable exceptions, although the chaos involved in protecting the jumpers as the approached the departure gate was "interesting." Volvo 65's short tacking near the dumplings is a site that will stick in my mind for quite a while. Lots of talk from race management about the race coming back to Newport.

If you like watching big matched rigs sailing close in the heat of battle, this was one not to miss.

Re: Volvo in Newport

Did one of the boats overshoot the course and go into the crowd in front of Fort Wetherill?

I heard something about this, but was not there to see it so cannot confirm. I will say this, needed eye's behind my head, in front, and all sides...both for the incredible spectacle and to stay safe. Hope you had a great time, your video sure looked like you did.

Re: Volvo in Newport

Went out for the In-port on Saturday with my son, was great to watch, and an unbelievable experience. The crowd was incredible, and I can't say I saw any mishaps in the people that were there. Everyone polite, talking excitedly, cheering teams on, it was awesome. Maybe I'll have to get me a zoomier lens after all one of these days!

Can you imagine the square feet of that main sail? Look at those lines and low profile, look at those 50' overhangs. Breath taking she was. I have her in one of my videos too, I'll get it.

Re: Volvo in Newport

Thanks for posting! I was planning to go, and was planning to bring my sailing class there as an, er - exercise...

Instead, we ended up in Hadley Harbor on Sunday - practically all by ourselves!

When we got back to the Cape on Sunday night, the contrast was unbelievable. I looked at the open water, no crazy sailors, chase boats, screaming fans, choppers in the air, blue lights flashing, and said ....Ahhhhhhhh!

Like getting home from a rock concert. Your ears are still buzzing, it was great, but the contrast was stark!
