Crazy things people say

A friend of mine who has sailed with me a lot in the past has become more interested in sailing. Last summer she spent several day trips riding along and assisting when needed but this summer she has been doing more driving and sail trimming. She has said a few zingers while at the helm lately. Here are a few good ones.

A few weeks ago we had the main up and I was down below getting the jib ready when the main started to luff. I said "The sail is flopping because we are headed straight into the wind"
"Well what do you want me to do about it?!"
"Turn left.... or right...."

Last night we were beating into the wind and I said we kept either coming off the wind and heeling too much or turning into the wind and luffing the sails. When I started explaining what was going on and how to fix it she said "why should i know which direction the wind is blowing?"
"Because you're driving a sailboat! You do know how this works right? It's not voodoo magic?"

Your friend still doesn't quite grasp the idea of laminar flow, and that the wind is a living thing that constantly moves around.
Her job is to keep air flowing over the foils, (obviously). Either trim the sails or move the boat.

Asking "Why should I know which way the wind is blowing" is like saying "Why should I notice whether or not there's a curve in the road" when driving a car.

Re: Crazy things people say

People can be a bit nit-picky on language, eh??

I had a friend who's been out sailing with me a few times. The first time out, after we'd been sailing for a bit, I let him take the tiller. He seemed to be doing OK, so I gradually started paying less attention to what he was doing. We were beating upwind.

Next thing I know, the boat had jibed, (fortunately the main was snugged in tight), and I look over to see him texting away on his phone instead of paying attention!

Safe to say I took the tiller back!

Re: Crazy things people say

It was supposed to be a funny post....I tend to not get too hung up on the language because the last thing I want when I need someone to do something quickly is have them go "huh? starboard? which side is that again?!" I guess I could give vocabulary tests before we go sailing, but that doesn't seem like much fun at all. The lake I sail on is small enough that a person could fairly easily swim to the shore from the center so I tend to not take it too seriously.
