Would you prefer new sails or used sails? A friend of mine started a web site (seriously) to gather a list of classic sailboat owners who would be interested in new sails. The site has been up for 1 month! There is no cost, it is free. She has been writing advertisers and marketers in an effort to locate (advertiser~sponsors) to purchase new sails for those who have signed up. So, if you do not mind having your sail area filled with a corporate logo or brand name or product please visit the site and sign up. She said the only time the site is not up and running is when there are local thunderstorms since the server has been donated. The URL is XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX if the URL works in my post it is XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX She is not a business and if you know sailmakers who want to participate have them send an email. Or any questions there is an email link. Thanks everyone!
It should be pointed out that Sailvertise is going to ask for your phone number and a lot of details. Also, they require that
1. You have taken a boating safety course
2. You have AIS on your boat
Seems interesting, I don't have AIS so it's a non-starter for me.
Thank you for mentioning the collecting information part. Yes, but the contact information is NOT for public display or Spam or tele marketing. It for prospective advertiser-sponsor to be able to contact the person. That is confirmed behind the scenes. Then the two are put in contact with each other. Personally I am not a fan of spam or tele marketing so having this going on behind the scenes I thought she had a good idea with that. The boating safety course is a plus for prospective advertiser-sponsor to see (it is a min requirement but not necessary, I believe that is a yes or no question on the form. The AIS system can be substituted with BoatBeacon a Free App on Google. All you need is a cell phone with a data plan. One of those pay as you go plans it just sends the GPS signal to one of those boat traffic sites. Hope this helps!
So, my mainsail would be a big billboard? I'm cool with Fender guitars, Dewar's scotch, or maybe Porsche, but what if I get the Viagra sail, or the Depends?
I guess it Depends (oh sorry that was bad but it was an opportunity)! Yep, in effect a giant floating billboard! Why not? Id be happy with a Campbells Tomato Soup Can or Star Kist Tuna or Snap Crackle n Pop, or M&M's, or Coppertone, or Jet Blue, or Bayer or Merck or Unilever or J&J or.....Doritoes or Lays...or ... there might be pros and cons to a Viagara sail! It Depends!
Aren't we already plagued by corporate commercialization enough in every other aspect of our lives? Sure new sails are certainly nice, but I really don't want to be a floating advertisement for anyone other than the loft that made the sail (I'm ok with the loft's patch in the corner).
Or, is the appeal that we get to pretend we're rockstar pros with corporate sponsors? In my case, that would most certainly be false advertising! :laugh
Just what I want to see ... ads plastered all over the sailing horizon . How about my hull? Might as well plaster that with corporate patches just like sports cars. What else can I sell? I've got an increasing amount of forehead space as my hair recedes, can I sell that?
Is there no place we can go to escape this incessant drum beat of Buy BUY BUY!!!.
This seems to fit into the internet generation, advertising pays for things. Between this and "crowd sourced funding." (AKA Internet begging) I might consider it as long as it was somehow removable. So do a year with it on, then remove it. Seems this could work for large events.
This whole concept was created to try and help fellow sailors who were interested. Unfortunately, some fellow sailors thought otherwise. So, I guess if anyone is still interested it now means sending me a private message (I think that is allowed?). I Do have to admit the Viagra Depends comments were really worth it! Still laughing!
Yes ... that's what I've always found ... that businesses and corporations spend money advertising their products so as to benefit everyone else .
Look, I understand it's a deal that ideally is a win-win arrangement. So please, save the "help fellow sailors" rhetoric. Name it for what it is; a commercial transaction. Nothing wrong with that, but noble and selfless it ain't.
Sounds like this is the same concept as allowing companies to put advertising on your car. Or the people who have weddings where everything is donated in return for advertising. I suppose that after a while people stop paying attention to the internet ads and roadside billboards so businesses have to try other ways to get to you. I doubt it's about helping out fellow sailors but that's just my opinion.
Yep, its a win-win but seriously, that "web place" is NOT making a dime on it (maybe they should but then it would be a business but its not). I do understand what you are saying ... if you knew me you would know that I do things like this for other people ... for myself ... and try anyway ... nothing ventured nothing gained ...
