DC sailors Hampton One Design, $$, and college???

I'm looking into buying, or working for, a hampton one design.

i know a bit about this boat.

the group i've been hanging out with at the docks in DC sails 'em, and there really into these boats- kinda a chesapeke heritage thing- the "best on the bay" as they call it.

they're really into keeping the class alive, and the one of the head fellows took me out, and i had a blast.

his friend's selling one- for $1500, but would sell it to me for $1200, with trailer, 1 racing set, 1 practice set, and a dry slip through march on the river.

he would do installments, and really wants to see me get out and become part of the pack. he's moved up, purchasing a newer hampton.

the boat's an "ugly duckling" with a lot of potential, but i've been told by everyone it's a good, solid boat for a college student looking to get into racing. these guy's are all pretty cool, have professional careers, and don't appear to be looking to make a quick buck.

i'm trying to figure out what to do. would the maintanence on an 18ft older fiberglass boat (with a little teak- coamings and what not) be that expensive? i figure that the dry slip would cost me $500 or so for 6 months. should i get a partner? i'm a college student, full time, in DC (expensive city) and just got offered good job- but never seem to have money up until now.

anyone know of anyone looking to split slip fees to use a boat for a year in DC (i wanna maintain ownership)??????
