We're finally leaving for good this spring. Was wondering if anyone has ever used a mail service for there mail? I was wondering if we did would the mail service address be my address for documentation. Also if I use an address where there are no state taxes this could be a big savings. Any advice?

St. Brendan's Isle http://www.boatmail.net/ in FL serves this purpose for many and has gotten good reviews from cruisers over the year. And yes...you can then use FL for tax purposes but that doesn't mean other states won't come after you if you have assets in their locals and can't prove you weren't there! Keep your receipts or credit card records.

Using addresses like boatmail.net can cause you serious problems if they go out of business. I would use the address of a trusted friend or relative instead. That way, mail can be handled properly. If you give them a limited power of attorney, they can even handle renewing your insurance and documentation, as well as FCC licenses.

Sorry...but relatives die, move, get angry with all the crap they have to manage for you. St. Bredan's Isle has been doing this nearly 20 years and as they say:

Anything the SSCA rates highly is a PROVEN service in the WORLD-wide cruising community. Lots more reliable than relatives!

Yes, but mail that is forwarded can often get lost. Having a relative deal with the important paperwork, like your insurance, boat documentation, and such is probably better than risking losing it in the mail.

I'm not advocating not using a mail-forwarding service, but that you might want to consider having a relative handle the most important paperwork and details, and leave the rest to the mail forwarding service. Think about what happens if your mail forwarding company goes out of business, and your on a bluewater passage, and may not find out about it for a few weeks. If they end up with your insurance and boat documentation, and it is "dropped" in the process of their business shutting down, you could get royally borked for it. I doubt my sister, her husband, and her two kids are all going to disappear without anyone noticing it.
